Tom Yum Goong - Thai Spicy and Sour Prawn Soup

Last week I went to Phuket Island, an island located south west of Thailand. Phuket is very popular and it has visitors coming all over the world. We were informed by our guide that the best time to visit Phuket is from November to January as during these months, there will be very little rain as compared to the other months. Phuket is famous for its beaches and the other smaller islands around this area. Two of the main attraction here is Phi Phi Island and James Bond Island. Island hopping is not all you can do over here, you may also join the cooking class which is conducted daily by some restaurants and hotels. I had the opportunity to join a class and learned how to cook Tom Yum Goong, a spicy and sour prawn soup from scratch.

Ingredients:

  • Prawns
  • 1 1/2 cup of Water
  • Galangal
  • Lemongrass
  • Kaffir lime leaves
  • Thai shallot
  • Small green chillies
  • 2 spoons Fish sauce
  • Sugar
  • Lime juice
  • Chili paste

Steps:

  1. Boil the water and add the chili paste.
  2. Mix them together and add the fish sauce, sugar, lime juice and all the other ingredients.
  3. Stir until the soup is boiling, then add the prawns.
  4. Once the prawns are cooked, serve it warm with rice.
